Access Community Education held a voting workshop at The Access Gateway for some of Australia’s newest citizens before the Local Government elections (and before we had to close our facilities!) back in March.

Participants were given important information about the local elections and the upcoming Queensland election, learned how Australia’s electoral system works and how to vote, familiarised themselves with Electoral Commission materials, participated in a mock election and enrolled to vote for the first time!

With Australia’s preferential voting system often complex at first, these workshops greatly assist new citizens to know their rights and to become engaged with our democratic process.
