Harmony Week is an annual celebration to recognise our diverse nation and the successful integration of migrants into society.

It is about inclusiveness, respect and belonging for all Australians, regardless of their background. This cultural diversity is one of Australia’s greatest strengths and what makes our country a great place to live.

The theme for 2021 was Everyone Belongs, with events and celebrations all over the country reflecting this theme.

At Access, it has always been one of our strongest beliefs that gaining employment is an important factor which contributes to a sense of belonging for new arrivals. Not only does a job contribute to this feeling of inclusion, but it helps migrants and refugees gain independence, stability and self-worth in their new country.

However, many refugees and migrants face barriers to employment, such as English proficiency, disrupted education, unrecognised qualifications and unfamiliarity with the Australian job market.

To mark Harmony Week, we partnered with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) to highlight the importance of employment for culturally and linguistically diverse people; showcasing some of our own clients’ stories and experiences. The videos also display to employers the benefits in hiring culturally and linguistically diverse applicants, and were played at TMR’s own Harmony Week celebration.
